A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Biggest Security Action on Criminal Groups
No less than 64 civilians were killed in a police operation against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's records.
Four police officers lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. Over 80 suspects were detained.
Violent conflicts erupted when around 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials stated.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the security action, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Mission Consequences
The informal settlements near the city's international airport is considered to be the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
State officials said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
