Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off after a rollercoaster last day of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from around eight foot to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off victory over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final green.
Playoff Climax
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to make up, finishing one shot short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
