Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
