Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on unneeded gifts might be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done the right way.

A Charitable Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The diverse haul could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They will be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. The specific date remains to be announced, although the goal is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the proceeds going to various charities.

Storage Room Collection

These gifts are currently kept in a secure area on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been sitting unused indefinitely.

The detailed catalog remains disclosed, but partial details emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was presented in parliament. The query focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being followed. By law, a prime minister must declare presents valued above €300.

An International Assortment of Presents

Notable gifts feature:

  • A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • An assortment including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Political Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from her allies, with garnering support from global statesmen and making Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to manage the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a time in office.
