Chainsaw Man Tops American Box Office in Debut Weekend
Can Sony claim to have done it again? Following the triumph of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed over $600 million globally, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the $100 million threshold internationally, reaching a international earnings of $108 million during its debut. This movie surpassed the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second week in cinemas, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Strong American and International Performance
The work of Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It brought in $18.2 million in North America after a strong $5.2 million Saturday box office and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday take. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced film added nearly $15 million across 46 Sony markets, resulting in a global sum of $60.4 million via Sony ($43.1M overseas, $18.2 million stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its complete box office tally.
Benchmarks to Past Successful Anime Films
Anime marketing agency an industry expert previously spoke, comparing the film’s projected performance to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the U.S. and Canada in 2022 and opened to a nearly identical $18 million domestically. This movie's debut weekend aligns with that benchmark, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar global gross currently tracks just behind that movie's over $166 million final run. While it is improbable this Chainsaw Man film will achieve the box office of mega hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a huge win for the distributor.
Fan Engagement Campaigns Fuel Box Office Dominance
Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used community involvement to propel their supremacy at the anime box office. The Reze Arc marketing campaign began at the Anime Expo in LA in summer with a discussion featuring MAPPA, unique experiences, and Pochita photo ops, then continued with a major presence at NYCC showcasing exclusive clips, audience giveaways, and further MAPPA discussions. Moreover, organizers held an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and popular figures too after the last day of the convention.

2025 is a significant period for anime, and for Sony, which has an additional anime film releasing in 2025 in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
