Populist-leaning Mogul Andrej Babiš Secures Victory in Czech Parliamentary Election

Populist billionaire Andrej Babiš has emerged victorious in the Czech legislative polls in a stunning political return that puts the country on a course away from assisting Ukraine and aligning with Hungary and Slovakia, which have taken a Russia-friendly direction.

Poll Outcomes and Ballot Allocation

With votes from almost 98% of polling stations tallied by the statistics office, Babiš’s YES political movement secured a 35% share. They were trailed by the pro-western coalition of the incumbent premier, Petr Fiala, with 23 percent. This faction had overcome Babiš in the previous election.

The two-day election allocated 200 seats in the parliament's lower chamber. A coalition of municipal heads known as STAN, also a component of Fiala’s administration, received 11.1% of the vote, with an additional supporter of Fiala, the Pirates political group, reaching 8.7 percent.

Possible Coalition Allies

The group opposing migration, the SPD party, obtained 7.9 percent while a conservative faction calling itself the Motorists' party secured 6.8 percent. These two are possible allies for Babiš if he aims to establish a ruling coalition.

Foreign Policy Shift

With the victory, Babiš is expected to unite with the circle of prime ministers Viktor Orban of Hungary and Robert Fico of Slovakia, whose countries have declined to offer military aid to Ukraine, continue to import Russian oil and oppose EU sanctions on Russia.

The Czech Republic has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s comprehensive assault in the start of 2022. The state has supplied military equipment including major firearms to the Ukrainian military and is behind an project that obtains artillery shells Ukraine badly needs from states beyond the European Union.

Strategic Changes and Partnerships

Babiš has cast doubt on this assistance and also refused to fully endorse a Nato commitment to markedly boost defence spending.

He collaborated with his associate Orbán last year to form a new alliance in the European parliament, the “European Patriots”, to represent far-right factions, a major change from the centrist Renew faction that Babiš was formerly part of.
