Research Reveals UK Government Officials Held Meetings With Fossil Fuel Industry Representatives In 500 Sessions During Opening Year of Government

Based on fresh findings, UK officials engaged with agents of the oil and gas sector in excess of 500 times throughout their initial year in office – amounting to double per weekday.

Significant Increase Compared to Previous Administration

The study revealed that petroleum sector advocates were present at 48% extra ministerial meetings in the present administration's first year compared to the prior year.

Government Defense

Ministers supported the discussions, claiming that representatives conducted discussions with a broad spectrum of representatives from "the energy industry, unions and public organizations to propel our clean energy major project".

Increasing Apprehensions About Corporate Lobbying

Yet, the findings have caused alarm among observers about the scope of the petroleum industry's leverage over ministers at a moment when leaders are working to decrease expenses and move to a more sustainable energy system.

Key Findings

The study, which draws from the ministerial released data of government discussions, further discovered:

  • Ministers at the Energy and Climate Department engaged with fossil fuel lobbyists 274 times, with industry figures present at approximately one-fourth of meetings.

  • The energy minister met with petroleum sector advocates 250 times – with one-third of each discussion featuring sector representatives.

  • Throughout the same period ministry officials engaged with worker group agents 61 times.

  • Several prominent oil corporations engaged with representatives 100 times between them.

  • Petroleum sector advocates participated in almost every official session about the energy profits levy, a short-term tax on the "extraordinary profits" of offshore energy corporations.

Official Responses

A Green party MP commented: "Instead of considering researchers, residents suffering from environmental disasters, or families anxious to secure a secure tomorrow for their descendants, this government is favoring corporate representatives and profits for oil and gas giants."

Government Rebuttal

Ministers maintained the findings were "misleading", saying several of the firms listed also had clean energy investments and that these topics were typically the main topic of the discussions.

"Our main focus is a equitable, organized and thriving shift in the offshore region in accordance with our climate and statutory requirements, and we are cooperating with the field to protect current and future generations of decent work."

Broader Context

Multiple major petroleum industry giants have been criticised for slashing their green spending in recent years amid a worldwide opposition against climate action.

A campaigns manager from an environmental law organization stated: "Ministers promised a people-focused leadership, but that shouldn't involve yielding to corporations profiting out of environmental crisis. It's time to cease favoring environmental offenders and focus on the public."
