Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, reacting to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' historic 33-32 win over the Giants. Payton remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Partnership
- The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
- Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious breakup between the player and his coach.
