Severe Precipitation Exacerbate Circumstances for Evacuated Residents of Gaza, UN Alert
Persistent rains over the last seven days have compounded the extremely difficult situation of the hundreds of thousands of evacuated Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to aid agencies.
"Horrendous" Night Creates Serious Threats
A official described the recent storm as "awful", with downpours so intense that up to 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the streets.
"Last night was truly horrendous for the residents. The downpours were so intense... And the gusts were so strong," noted the spokesperson.
There is extreme concern that young ones sheltering in tents in soaked garments will contract hypothermia and various ailments.
Casualties and Significant Destruction
Health authorities have confirmed that one baby has died from exposure and at least 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins caused by the harsh conditions.
Further statements suggest a higher fatality count. Authorities said that several homes had collapsed completely and scores had been partly destroyed.
- Almost 55,000 families impacted by the weather.
- More than 40 emergency shelters submerged.
- Many people forced to move once more.
Assistance Distribution Deemed Not Enough
Agencies have stepped up shipments of tents, warm covers and garments since the ceasefire began, but they emphasize there is remains not enough aid reaching those in need.
"We are operating tirelessly to provide that aid and to allocate it, but the magnitude of the needs is so enormous that we continue to see a great number of families and minors who are really struggling each evening," stated one spokesperson.
Long-Term Challenges and Agreement Plans
The next stage of the ceasefire involves proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the withdrawal of troops, and other conditions.
Aid groups have highlighted the necessity for "increased and sustained aid to address urgent and ongoing requirements."
The hostilities was triggered by an attack in the autumn of 2023. Later military operations have caused a significant number of casualties in the region, as per medical figures.
