Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the past of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 has them experience a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the means to overcome him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies not within the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

Like many elements in volume 2, the truth about the encounter is detailed in the stage play The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

The play reveals the 1943 event, which transported a vessel into a plane known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is understood of his research, the case almost certainly contained vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. From then on, he struggles with the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to become stronger.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the endgame conflict that awaits.
